The term exothermic process describes a process or reaction in thermodynamics that releases energy from the system to its environment, typically in the form of heat, but often in the form of light, electricity, or sound. The definition is also applied to chemical reactions in the physical sciences, such as in chemical bond energy which is converted into thermal energy (heat). Simply put, more energy was released into the surrounding after an exothermic reaction than was consumed to start and sustain the reaction.
